Foil Baked Sesame Ginger Salmon Recipe

Sesame ginger salmon in foil is an easy, flavorful dinner made with tender baked salmon and a glossy sweet-savory glaze. Fresh ginger, honey, lime juice, garlic, sesame oil, and a small amount of sriracha come together to create a bold sauce that coats the fish beautifully. As the salmon bakes inside the foil packet, the glaze stays close to the fillet, keeping it moist while infusing every bite with bright, Asian-inspired flavor.

This recipe is ideal for a weeknight meal because it requires very little prep and keeps cleanup simple. The foil does most of the work by sealing in the juices and preventing the glaze from spreading all over the pan. Once the salmon is nearly cooked, opening the packet and placing it briefly under the broiler helps the honey caramelize into a lightly sticky, golden finish.

Salmon is a reliable choice for quick dinners because it cooks fast, pairs well with many seasonings, and has a rich, satisfying texture. In this version, the fresh ginger gives the dish warmth and brightness, while the honey balances the tang from the lime juice. The sriracha adds just a gentle kick, but you can increase it if you prefer a spicier glaze.

The key to the best sesame ginger salmon is using fresh ginger rather than dried ground ginger. Freshly grated ginger has a sharper, more aromatic flavor that stands out in the glaze and gives the dish its signature taste. Paired with sesame oil and garlic, it creates a sauce that is simple but layered enough to make the salmon feel special without adding extra effort.

How to Cook Salmon in Foil

Cooking salmon in foil is one of the easiest ways to keep it tender and flavorful. The foil packet traps steam, sauce, and natural juices, helping the fish bake evenly without drying out. It also keeps the glaze directly around the salmon, so the flavors remain concentrated while the fish cooks.

  1. Place the salmon fillet on a large piece of greased aluminum foil. Season it with salt and pepper, then fold the edges of the foil upward slightly to create a shallow barrier. This helps keep the sesame ginger glaze from spilling out before the packet is sealed.
  2. Pour the glaze over the salmon, coating the top of the fillet. Fold the foil over the fish and seal it into a packet. Bake until the salmon is cooked through, then carefully open the foil and broil the top for a few minutes to brown and lightly caramelize the glaze.

Sesame Ginger Glaze

The sesame ginger glaze is made with grated fresh ginger, minced garlic, honey, lime juice, sesame oil, olive oil, and sriracha. It is tangy, sweet, savory, and gently spicy. The honey gives the glaze body and helps it thicken slightly under the broiler, while the lime juice keeps the flavor fresh and balanced.

Because the glaze is poured over the salmon before baking, it has time to mingle with the fish as it cooks. Some of the sauce may collect around the sides of the fillet inside the foil packet, which is perfectly fine. Before broiling, spooning some of that glaze back over the top helps create an even more flavorful finish.

Finish With a Broil

Broiling the salmon at the end is a small step that makes a noticeable difference. After the salmon has baked through in the sealed foil packet, open the foil carefully to expose the top of the fillet. Return it to the oven and broil for 3 to 5 minutes, just until the surface is lightly browned and the glaze begins to caramelize.

Watch the salmon closely during this step because honey can brown quickly under high heat. The goal is a glossy, slightly sticky top with a little color, not a burned glaze. Once finished, garnish the salmon with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for a fresh, simple presentation.

Sesame Ginger Salmon in Foil Recipe
Baked salmon topped with a sweet ginger glaze made with fresh ginger, honey, lime juice, sesame oil, garlic, and a touch of sriracha.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound salmon filet
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • green onions, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Sesame Ginger Glaze

  • 1 tablespoon ginger root, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon sriracha, add more for extra spice
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • Juice from half a lime
  • 1-2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  • In a small bowl, combine the grated ginger, sriracha, honey, lime juice, minced garlic, olive oil, and sesame oil. Stir until the sesame ginger glaze is smooth and well mixed.
  • Spray a sheet of aluminum foil with cooking spray and place the salmon fillet in the center. If the fillet is large, overlap two pieces of foil to create a wider surface. Fold up all four sides of the foil slightly, then season the salmon with salt and pepper.
  • Pour the ginger glaze evenly over the salmon. It is fine if some of the glaze pools around the edges inside the foil.
  • Fold the foil over the salmon so it is completely covered, then seal it into a closed packet. Place the packet on a baking sheet and bake until the salmon is cooked through, about 15 to 20 minutes for medium.
  • Remove the salmon from the oven and carefully open the foil to expose the top of the fillet. Spoon some of the collected glaze back over the salmon, then return it to the oven and broil on high for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the top is lightly browned.
  • Serve immediately, garnished with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
