DIY Room Air Fresheners You Can Make at Home

Hi friends! If you enjoy simple homemade projects, this easy DIY air freshener is a lovely way to make your home smell fresher without using strong store-bought sprays. Ever since I started using essential oils in small household projects, I have been surprised by how many practical uses they have. I first used them in homemade salt scrubs and sugar scrubs, and I loved how fresh they made everything smell. That naturally led me to look for a simple way to freshen up different rooms in the house.

This easy DIY air freshener is one of the simplest home fragrance ideas you can make. The air freshener itself uses only two basic ingredients: baking soda and essential oils. You will also need a jar and a breathable cover, but the mixture is quick, budget-friendly, and easy to customize with your favorite scents. It is a great option for anyone who prefers a light, natural fragrance instead of an overpowering artificial perfume.

I am very sensitive to heavy perfumes and artificial fragrances, so many commercial room fresheners are not a good fit for my home. Some rooms, though, definitely need a little help staying fresh. The laundry room and mud room can collect shoe odors quickly, and the kids’ bathroom can always use a cleaner scent. That is why I was so happy to find a homemade room deodorizer that is gentle, simple, and easy to refresh whenever needed.

Baking soda is often used around the home to help absorb unwanted odors, and essential oils add the scent. Together, they make a simple jar air freshener that can sit on a shelf, counter, or small table. The scent is not meant to be as strong as a plug-in or spray. Instead, it gives the room a softer, cleaner fragrance that you can adjust by adding more or fewer drops of oil.

Ingredients and Supplies

  • Baking soda
  • Mason jars
  • Scrap fabric
  • Essential oils of your choice

To make the air freshener, start with clean, dry mason jars. I used half-pint jars and added about one cup of baking soda to each jar. You do not have to measure perfectly, but filling the jar partway gives the baking soda enough space to hold the scent while still leaving room to stir.

Next, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil directly into the baking soda. Start with a small amount, stir well, and then add more if you want a stronger scent. Essential oils can be very concentrated, so it is better to begin lightly and adjust as needed. If you see a few small clumps after adding the oils, that is normal. Just stir the mixture until the oil is distributed through the baking soda.

Fresh citrus scents are perfect for this type of homemade air freshener. Orange and peppermint make a bright, clean combination, while lemon and lavender create a softer, relaxing scent. You can use one essential oil or blend two together, depending on the room and the mood you want to create. Lemon is nice for bathrooms and laundry areas, lavender works well in bedrooms, and peppermint can make a space feel crisp and refreshed.

For the jar cover, you only need a small piece of breathable fabric. Since I do not sew, I did not have a fabric stash to use, but an old T-shirt worked perfectly. I cut circles slightly larger than the mouth of the mason jars. Thin, stretchy fabric is ideal because it allows the fragrance to come through while still covering the baking soda. You can also poke a few tiny holes in the fabric with a pin if you want the scent to release a little more easily.

Remove the flat metal lid from the mason jar and replace it with the fabric circle. Then screw the metal ring back on to hold the fabric in place. That is all it takes to make a simple homemade air freshener with baking soda and essential oils. Before placing the jars in different rooms, give each one a gentle shake to refresh the mixture and help release the scent.

These DIY room air fresheners are easy to place in small spaces such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, entryways, closets, and mud rooms. Keep them somewhere stable where they will not be knocked over, especially if you have children or pets in the home. When the scent begins to fade, simply stir or shake the baking soda and add a few more drops of essential oil. If the baking soda no longer seems fresh, empty the jar and start again with a new batch.

I really like that this homemade air freshener is subtle rather than overpowering. It helps freshen the room without filling the air with a heavy perfume smell. It is also inexpensive to make, easy to customize, and a great way to use supplies you may already have at home. If you are looking for a simple natural room deodorizer, this mason jar air freshener is a quick project worth trying.

Thanks so much for visiting!
