Triple Chocolate Cake Recipe with Rich Chocolate Ganache

If you love a rich, moist chocolate dessert, this triple chocolate bundt cake is a recipe you will want to make again and again. It starts with a simple chocolate cake recipe made from cake mix, then adds a few easy ingredients that make it taste extra homemade. Chocolate pudding mix, sour cream, oil, eggs, and mini chocolate chips turn an ordinary boxed cake mix into a soft, decadent bundt cake with deep chocolate flavor in every slice. The texture is tender, the center stays wonderfully moist, and the cake has enough sweetness that it does not need frosting or glaze. Of course, if you prefer a more finished dessert, chocolate, vanilla, or caramel frosting would all pair beautifully with this easy chocolate bundt cake.

Nordic Ware sent me a unique square bundt pan from their Platinum Collection, and it gave this cake such a striking shape that I could not bring myself to cover it with frosting. The Bundt Squared Pan ($50, NordicWare.com) creates a dramatic cake design with clean lines, ridges, and detailed edges. It looks impressive without requiring any special decorating skills, which makes it perfect for holidays, birthdays, potlucks, or a family dessert night. Everyone who saw the cake before we sliced into it noticed the shape right away and wanted to know how it was made. A good bundt pan makes a big difference, especially when you want a cake that looks beautiful straight from the pan.

Triple Chocolate Cake Recipe

This easy triple chocolate cake recipe is a great option when you want a dessert that tastes rich and homemade but does not require complicated steps. The cake mix provides a reliable base, while the instant chocolate pudding mix helps create a dense, moist crumb. Sour cream adds tenderness, and miniature chocolate chips melt into the batter for even more chocolate flavor. Because this is a bundt cake, it also serves beautifully and can be sliced neatly for a crowd.

Ingredients

  • 1 Devil’s Food Cake Mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1 Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix (5.9 oz)
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 Cups Miniature Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Cup Canola Oil
  • 1 Cup Sour Cream
  • 4 Large Eggs, Beaten
  • 1/2 cup Water

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Generously coat the bundt cake pan with nonstick cooking spray, making sure to cover all the grooves and edges so the cake releases cleanly after baking.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, instant pudding mix, sour cream, canola oil, beaten eggs, and water. Stir until the ingredients are well blended. Fold in the miniature chocolate chips, then spoon or pour the thick cake batter evenly into the prepared bundt pan.

3. Bake for 1 hour and 5 minutes, or until the cake is fully baked in the center. *Note: Begin checking the cake around 50 to 55 minutes. Baking times can vary depending on your oven and the style of bundt pan you use. See the helpful baking hints below for additional tips.

4. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for one hour before carefully turning it out onto a cake plate. Letting the cake cool properly helps it release from the pan and keeps the detailed bundt shape intact.

Cake Baking Hints and Tips:

  • This chocolate cake batter will be thick and stiff. That is normal. Use a spoon or spatula to spread it evenly into the bundt pan so it fills the shape well.
  • My cake rose above the top edge of the pan while baking, but it did not spill over. Place the pan on a baking sheet if you want extra peace of mind.
  • At 50 minutes, the center of my cake still needed more baking time, but I did not want the outside to overbake. I covered the top loosely with a layer of foil and returned it to the oven for another 15 minutes, until a toothpick inserted near the center came out clean.

We served this triple chocolate bundt cake as dessert for a crowd of family members, and it disappeared before the night was over. The slices were rich, moist, and packed with chocolate chips, making it the kind of cake that does not need much else on the plate. My kids immediately asked me to bake another one so they could enjoy it again the next day. It is safe to say this easy chocolate cake recipe was a hit with everyone who tried it.
