Chocolate peanut butter fudge is one of those simple homemade treats that always feels special. It looks beautiful on a dessert tray, cuts into neat little squares, and has the kind of classic flavor combination that almost everyone loves. The best part is that this recipe does not require a candy thermometer, stovetop cooking, or complicated steps. Everything comes together in the microwave using sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, and peanut butter chips.

The fudge is made in two layers. First, the chocolate chips are melted with half of the sweetened condensed milk until smooth and glossy. That mixture is spread into the bottom of a lined pan. Then the peanut butter chips are melted with the remaining condensed milk and spread over the chocolate layer. Once chilled, the result is a firm but creamy layered fudge with a rich chocolate base and a peanut butter topping.

You could also call this buckeye fudge because it has the same chocolate and peanut butter flavors found in classic buckeye candies. No matter what name you choose, this microwave fudge is an easy dessert for holidays, parties, edible gifts, or anytime you want a sweet treat without much effort. Chopped peanut butter cups on top make it even more delicious, but they are optional. You can leave the top plain or use another topping if you prefer.

Making Fudge in the Microwave

This microwave chocolate peanut butter fudge is made with only a few ingredients. You will need one 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, semi-sweet chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, and miniature peanut butter cups if you want to decorate the top. The sweetened condensed milk gives the fudge its creamy texture and helps the layers set properly after chilling.

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 14 ounces or 395 grams
  • 1 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/4 cups peanut butter chips
  • Miniature peanut butter cups for topping, optional

To make the first layer, combine the chocolate chips with half of the sweetened condensed milk in a large heatproof bowl. Microwave on medium power in short intervals, stirring well between each interval, until the chocolate is just melted and the mixture is smooth. Spread the chocolate fudge into a parchment-lined pan, making sure it reaches the corners.

Repeat the same process with the peanut butter chips and the remaining sweetened condensed milk. Once the peanut butter mixture is smooth, spread it gently over the chocolate layer. If you are adding chopped peanut butter cups, press them lightly into the warm top layer so they stick as the fudge sets.

Pro Tip: Use medium microwave power rather than high heat. High heat can cause the chocolate to overcook, which may make the fudge grainy instead of smooth. Stirring often is also important because the chips will continue to melt as you mix them. If the fudge is difficult to spread, lightly coat a rubber spatula with non-stick cooking spray before smoothing each layer.

Storage & Freezing

Store chocolate peanut butter fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Keeping it chilled helps the fudge stay firm and makes it easier to cut into clean pieces. If stacking the pieces, place parchment paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together.

This fudge also freezes well. For best results, freeze the fudge before slicing it. Wrap the entire block tightly in aluminum foil at least twice, making sure no seams are exposed. Place the wrapped fudge in a freezer bag, seal it well, and freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to serve, thaw it in the refrigerator before cutting into squares.

  • Wrap the unsliced fudge tightly in aluminum foil.
  • Place the wrapped fudge in a freezer-safe bag.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Thaw in the refrigerator before slicing and serving.

Sliced fudge can also be frozen in an airtight container, although individual pieces may be more likely to develop freezer burn. If freezing sliced pieces, keep them well wrapped and use parchment between layers.
